Kanawinka
This vast volcanic area in south eastern Australia has currently applied for geopark status. Kanawinka means 'Land of Tomorrow" from the Buandik people.
The volcanic faultline extends from the Naracoorte Caves in South Australia into the Portland (Victoria) shoreline and north as far as Penola and Mount Hamilton.

It includes Mount Rouse, Mount Eccles, Mount Elephant, Mount Napier and Tower Hill, all of which were ancient volcanoes.

Koorie people lived here up to 40,000 years ago and settled in areas with abundant food, making stone huts and living together in large communities. They created dams and weirs in the wetland areas and set fish and eel traps at Lake Condah and Tyrendarra..

Early explorers included Major Thomas Mitchell, who was surprised to discover the Henty family had settled near Portland.
